Confederate General, Patrick Cleburne left his name here.
Cleburne was previously known as Camp Henderson. It was a temporary Civil War outpost from which Johnson County soldiers would go to war, most serving under Gen. Cleburne.
In 1871, the city was formally incorporated.
Cleburne was primarily an farming area & county seat until the Santa Fe Railroad opened a major facility there in 1898. Due to the RR it grew to over 12,000 residents by 1920.
Cleburne is Johnson County's third county seat.
